8 Shots Every Brand Film Needs (And Why)

4 min read

Every brand film is different, but the shots that make it feel finished are surprisingly consistent. Before we ever call "action," we plan for eight: the establishing shot, the hero shot, the detail insert, the human reaction, the process shot, the wide scale shot, the transition, and a closing shot that mirrors the opening.

The establishing shot earns its place first because it tells the audience where they are in under two seconds — a skyline, a storefront, a workspace. Skip it and every following shot has to work harder to orient the viewer.

The detail insert — a hand, a texture, a mechanism — is the one crews cut for time most often, and the one that's missed most in the edit. It's what makes a film feel crafted rather than assembled from leftovers.

None of this replaces a strong concept. But a concept without this coverage leaves an editor with gaps they can't shoot their way out of after the crew has gone home — which is why the list gets locked before the call sheet does.

AI video tools are starting to generate rough cuts of some of this coverage automatically — see our AI news roundup for what that actually changes about a shoot day, and what it still can't replace.

Let's build your brand story together.
